Starting April 1, 2008, sales tax rates increased by 0.25 percent in Cook County and by 0.5 percent in the collar counties of DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will on all goods including food, prescription and non-prescription medicines. The Regional Transportation Authority Board of Directors approved the two separate sales tax increases to provide $280 million in public transportation operating funds and $121 million for suburban transportation and public safety projects.
