Barrington Area LibraryThe Barrington Area Library has a terrific Alphabetical LIst of Databases, a great way to get started on any research project. Their reference staff are also terrific researchers, and always happy to help. You will need your library card PIN to access some information.

Infoplease, "all the knowledge you need," includes almanacs, atlas, dictionary, encyclopedia, timelines. Could be a great homework resource. Lots of ads, but someone has to pay for free information.

For those who simply itch to edit everything they read, Wikipedia is for you. This free only encyclopedia is actually written by the public, and entries are vetted by visitors. What you post may be changed or deleted by the next person. Information is fluid, not factual. Lively and engaging.

The Federal Consumer Information Center has available all those brochures and pamphlets you see advertised everywhere. Federal programs, health, consumer alerts, and so much more. A wonderful resource, especially helpful for homework research.

The International Movie Database is your ticket to a fabulous compendium of both movie and TV information: titles, casts, performer bios and lots more. Great answers to questions like, "Remember the guy from that movie...?"

Or when you cannot remember the words to that song, visit the Music Lyrics Database. Lots of different ways to come up with the lyrics to "our song."

For Broadway buffs, try the Cast Album Database, includes 3298 recordings of Broadway (and other) musicals. 28,346 song titles, 17,687 artists, 1843 titles and 2747 cover images (you iPod will love you).

What’s an "urban legend”? It's a matter of opinion, but the next time you hear about alligators in the sewer system, check it out at Snopes. Unless, of course, the web site itself is an “urban legend.”
